  • RYLA
    • Description: Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) is an excellent camp for teenagers which is hosted each summer by Rotary District 5390 and is located at Luccock Park, about 20 miles south of Livingston.  This camp, which usually meets for the second week of July, emphasizes training in leadership skills and is available to high school students in the summer between their Freshman and Sophomore years.  The students who attend are chosen by local Rotary clubs working together.
    • Results we want: The Rotary Club of Missoula wants to ensure that the high school students we sponsor have a wonderful experience at RYLA.  We hope that the students will return to their respective schools, join Interact clubs, become Rotary Youth Exchange students, graduate on to Rotaract in college, and eventually become leaders in their communities and proud members of our Rotary club.
    • General Standards: Before February, our chairman of the RYLA Committee needs to contact Sunrise and Centennial Rotary Clubs to see if they wish to participate in RYLA this year.  High school counselors at each high school in Missoula County will be contacted in early February and encouraged to make applications for RYLA available to freshmen in some class that all freshmen take after a brief presentation on what RYLA is and how it can benefit these students.  These applications must be brought to the counselors by RYLA Committee Members.  Applying students are interviewed by the RYLA Committee, which is made up of two or three Rotarians from each of the three Missoula Rotary clubs.  Interviewers are not looking for kids who are already leaders, but rather those for whom a leadership camp might be exactly what they need to become leaders.  Completed registration forms for the chosen attendees for 2013 must be turned in to the person handling registration forms for the district before the end of May in 2013.  Admission costs for this camp are paid for by the Rotary clubs and transportation is made available.
Current Needs:This RYLA Committee needs about three members who are comfortable and empathetic around nervous teenagers.  It is not required that any Rotarians serving on this Committee actually attend RYLA Camp.  However, it is suggested that dropping by for a visit during the camp session can be lots of fun and very enlightening.
