Community Projects - Adopt a Highway Project
Service Projects
Description: This committee will clean up litter along a 2 mile stretch of Highway at least three times per year. (Generally, spring, summer and fall) The commitment is for two years and the Club signs a contract with Montana Department of Transportation.
Results we want: Improve two miles of highway proximate to Missoula. Signs acknowledging Rotary involvement to beautify Missoula increase public awareness. The cleanup activity provides a service opportunity for Rotarians in the club. Rotary will provide both drinking water and lunch on the three days the activity is scheduled providing an opportunity for fellowship among the participants. Included in the recruitment information, the Adopt-a-Highway program offers solid evidence that the Rotary Club of Missoula is an active service club since this is a highly visible service activity.
General Standards: The Montana Department of Transportation has specific guidelines and safety procedures. The club must conduct at least two safety meetings per year. Participants must attend a safety meeting before participating and notes must be kept of these meetings. A copy of the safety meeting must be returned to MDT. The Club must anticipate that children under age 15 may participate. MDT requires that there be an adult supervisor per ten participants who are under the age of 15. All participants must wear a MDT supplied vest during the activity. In addition, the club is responsible for having a first aid kit and a means to provide drinking water to the activity. The MDT provides trash bags, signs and vests and all unused supplies must be returned to MDT within one week. The MDT picks up the trash after it is collected. Participants may not pick up syringes, dead animals or any possible toxic materials. The goal is to have a contract in place by September 30, 2012 and to undertake the first cleanup in the month of October 2012.
